Dentistry For Adults
Preventive Care In order to develop a personalized oral health care plan we begin each appointment with a thorough exam of your teeth, gums, bone, jaw joints and soft tissue. The most important preventive step against future gum problems is to establish good oral health habits today. The best way to prevent periodontal disease—and keep your teeth for a lifetime—is to get a customized treatment plan. In fact, the scope of preventive dentistry may extend beyond the mouth. There is mounting evidence that having a clean and disease free mouth may help prevent other medical problems such as heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and diabetes. Early recognition and counseling on poor habits that might negatively influence your dental health, such as poor diet and smoking, may help create more successful treatment outcomes. Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is a simple, safe, oxygenating procedure used to lighten and brighten discolored teeth. Naturally yellow or darker teeth will benefit greatly from whitening! Whitening is most effective when teeth have become discolored due to yellowing from age, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, sodas, dark fruit, medications, chemically induced stains, accidents, trauma, and decay. Whitening is not effective in whitening existing crowns or porcelain veneers. How is it done? How long does it take? We have two methods: in-office whitening and home whitening. The in-office whitening requires an initial visit to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure. In office whitening is accomplished through one office visit; the whitening solution is applied to the front surfaces of the teeth and activated with a safe, effective cool blue lamp. Naturally yellow or darker teeth will benefit greatly from whitening. Most discolored teeth require only one office visit of about an hour AND typically a maintenance bleaching tray with a special bleaching solution for home. At-home whitening requires an initial visit to determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure and for fitting of special custom made trays for your teeth. These thin, comfortable trays hold a special gel that usually whitens your teeth over a period of 7-10 days. With home whitening, you apply a mild whitening solution inside a custom-made tray that you wear for as little as 45minutes a day. The home system can take 10-14 days for the best results. Bonding What is composite bonding? Bonding is a form of smile sculpture accomplished with a special composite resin, which enables patients with imperfections in their teeth to have more attractive smiles for an affordable price. Bonding can be used to close spaces, change the color of the teeth, mask any discolorations, repair chips, alter the size or shape of teeth, and give mal-aligned or crooked teeth a straight-looking appearance. How is it done? Bonding is a simple procedure, but it may require getting your other teeth to a pleasing color first, through whitening. First, a solution is painted on the tooth enamel. A liquid resin is then flowed onto the tooth surface. A putty-like resin is then sculpted on the tooth and hardened with a bright light to a durable finish. It is polished and smoothed to a life-like luster. The bonding process is usually reversible. Depending on the number of teeth involved, one visit of several hours is usually all that is needed. How long does it last? The life of bonding is 8 - 10 years depending on your lifestyle. If you drink, smoke or use your teeth as “tools”, you may not see the entire life expectancy of your bonding. At the end of the bonding's term, a resurfacing (1/2 the cost) usually suffices. A complete re-bonding rarely is necessary. Composite Fillings These tooth colored resin fillings have replaced silver/mercury/amalgam fillings and have advanced to state-of-the-art status as the material of choice for small cavities or to replace small existing amalgam fillings. They are not a permanent solution, lasting usually 5 to 10 years. They are beautiful, durable, take only one visit to place and are now BPA free. Periodontal Smile Enhancement Periodontal smile enhancement services help make smiles last a lifetime. These cosmetic services offer a predictable way to cover unsightly, sensitive or exposed root surfaces and to prevent future gum recession, decay, or loss of teeth. If you are unhappy with the appearance of short, unsightly teeth this can be greatly improved by a combination of periodontal procedures by Dr. Niver and cosmetic dentistry by Dr. de los Reyes. Pregnancy During pregnancy, women may experience increased gingivitis, termed “pregnancy gingivitis”, beginning in the second or third month of pregnancy that increases in severity throughout the eighth month. During this time, some women may notice swelling, bleeding, redness or tenderness in the gum tissue. Studies have shown a relationship between periodontal disease and pre-term, low-birth-weight babies. Any infection, including periodontal infection, is cause for concern during pregnancy. It’s never too late to fix a condition, just schedule an appointment today. If you are planning to become pregnant, be sure to include a periodontal evaluation by Dr. Niver as part of your prenatal care. Orthodontics (Braces) Orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile - it creates a healthier you. Crowded teeth are more difficult to properly brush and floss, which may contribute to tooth decay and/or gum disease. Protruding teeth are more susceptible to accidental chipping. Cross-bites can result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear. Open bites can result in tongue - thrusting habits and speech impediments. >Click here to learn more
